Corrections, A.A.S.

The Occupational Development program with a Corrections emphasis has been designed to prepare those employed in the field of corrections with knowledge and credentials needed to advance their careers. Without these or similar credentials, an officer employed under the West Virginia Civil Service classification system is unable to advance beyond the Apprenticeship Level I unless he/she has successfully completed a training course in corrections or has extensive employment experience in a related field. Currently, no other West Virginia college or university offers an occupational development program with a specific emphasis in corrections.

This program of study is a cooperative program offered through the Community and Technical College of West Virginia University Institute of Technology, the West Virginia Department of Corrections (WVDOC), and the West Virginia Department of Labor. In order to complete portions of this program of study, students must have successfully completed the WVDOC Academy training and the WVDOC registered apprenticeship program for corrections officers. To complete both of these, one must be employed as a corrections officer with the WVDOC.

Prior to completion of the required courses listed in the pattern sheet below, candidates for graduation must request that the WVDOC provide to the registrar of the college certification of completion of both the academy training and the on-the-job training required in the registered apprenticeship program. Documentation is to affirm and certify that all instructional objectives, including time on task and competency levels, have been met and that the RAP have been completed. Eighteen (18) hours of college credit will be awarded at the time of graduation for successful completion of the academy training. likewise, thirteen (13) hours of credit will be awarded for successful completion of the WVDOC registered apprenticeship training program. Both of these elements are a requirement for graduation from this program.
